Despite the fact dry January has just ended, Aldi has had a 4% sales boost for wine and beer during the month.

This means the German-owned Aldi has taken over The Co-op to become the UK’s 5th largest supermarket. Aldi’s total sales for the year, the 12 weeks up until January 29th 2017, rose 12.4% in comparison to Co-ops 6%.

The Christmas period was a very lucrative time for the sparkling wine industry as it has been named as a key factor in sales increases.

Prosecco, in particular, helped boost sales at Aldi and The Co-op. The sparkling wine category has seen a strong rise within the drinks industry.
