Albert de Vilarnau Cava

26th September 2014

Vilarnau is a top-end, finely crafted Cava produced on a small and very exclusive scale with a touch of the avant-garde about it. This Cava has many links to the city of Barcelona with strong links to the modern, cutting edge spirit of the one of Spain’s most famous conurbations .

Vilarnau is situated in the highest point in the region, a place called Espiells, 250m above sea level. These higher altitudes mean that the grapes undergo a slower maturation process, producing wines with higher acidity.

They own 15 hectares of vineyard and controls a further 70 hectares through long term contracts with the growers. The grape varieties planted are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Macabeo, Xarel.lo , Parellada and Trepat.

Albert de Vilernau is a blend of Chardonnay, Macabeo and Parellada. The Chardonnay goes through its first fermentation in new French Allier oak barrels while the Macabeo and Parellada are fermented separately in stainless steel tanks.

The wine is then blended and bottled for the second fermentation. It is then ages for a minimum of 36 months in bottle prior to disgorgement. Riddling and disgorgement are carried out by hand. This cava is classified as Extra Brut.
